According to the latest KfW Skilled Labor Barometer, 44% of all companies were affected by a shortage of skilled workers in April 2022. This means that a lack of skilled workers has once again become a far more frequent obstacle to production than before the pandemic. All sectors of the economy are affected. In the manufacturing sector, around 40% of companies saw their business activities hampered by a shortage of skilled workers, by far the highest proportion in the last 30 years.

The sharp rise in the shortage of skilled workers can be attributed to twotwo causes can be cited:

  1. companies’ bulging order books in conjunction with
  2. the increasingly noticeable demographic change.

The rapid implementation of a comprehensive and varied package of measures is urgently needed to curb the current trend.
